The Donahue covered the spectrum in the category of Memphis Places, from casino action to hotel elegance to the house of the Lord.
Winner of the Best Casino in three categories was Horseshoe Casino. It won for paying, staying and entertainment, much to the delight of George Klein, a host at the casino who is a longtime radio and TV celebrity and friend of the late Elvis Presley. That meant Horseshoe won three of the coveted "M" Awards although The Donahue kept trying to use them as chips.
Earlier, the Master Celebrity Interviewer had visited The Peabody to give it its Best Hotel award and get an exclusive face-to-beak conversation with the famous ducks. Unfortunately, his reporter's notebook fell into the fountain and all the notes he had taken were lost. "This has never happened before in my lifetime," he groused, and we believe him.
Meanwhile, there may have been no more uplifting visit than the one to Hope Presbyterian Church, recipient of our readers' vote as Best Place of Worship. For it was here that The Donahue experienced some humility, probably inspired by pastor Craig Strickland's dog, who chased the King of the Party Favors all around the sanctuary. And that's the gospel truth.
