If there was ever a master of style, it would be The Donahue.
So he was delighted to be able to present Memphis Most Awards to some of the classier retail joints in town.
First was Joseph, voted the Best Women's Shoe Store, a place where Manolo Blahniks can be had for $945, but where owner Shirley Wexner announced, "Tory Burch is the hottest thing I've got in now." To which The Donahue said, "Oh, I thought it was me."
Next up was Oak Hall, the 150-year-old gentlemen's establishment voted Best Men's Fashion Store. Immediately after presenting the "M" to co-owner Bob Levy, the Memphis Most Host went straightaway to one of the three-way mirrors and inspected it closely. The retinue was able to get out before another 150 years passed.
Over at Davis-Kidd, voted Best Bookstore, The Donahue mixed and mingled with customers, some of whom thought he was there to do a book signing. He cracked that his appearance was made possible by the letter "M" The literati chortled.
He later visited The Avenue Carriage Crossing, Collierville's elegant outdoor retail destination named the Best Shopping Center/Mall. The Donahue spent many happy hours driving around the traffic circles waving at happy passersby.
