About us
Since opening to the public in the 1970s, Shelby Farms has been a battleground for those who see it as a huge roadblock to (or opportunity for) development and those who want to preserve its natural state. Oddly, the tension has resulted in Shelby Farms becoming not just one of the most ecologically diverse and beautiful public spaces but also one of the most utilitarian. The 4,500-acre park offers a little something for everyone: bird watching, disc golf, fishing, boating, trails and a dog run. The grounds have even been known to host a concert or two. Last year, county government took aims to ensure the integrity of the site, roughly five times the size of New York's Central Park, by establishing the Shelby Farms Park Conservancy. This summer the group selected from among three finalists a new master planner for the park that strives to bring a more coherent structure to the area's patchwork of offerings.
